Blonde Hair, Don’t Care

By the time my appointment came, I almost didn’t even want to do it anymore.  I got it in my head around the end of October that I wanted to dye my hair platinum blonde, and like most things, once I have the idea, I can’t just let it go.  I either act impulsively, or obsess over it until I finally just do it.  In the same manner, I have completed various certification programs, started (and continue) to write a blog, opened an Etsy shop, and  even got pregnant and had a baby.  Once an idea is in my head there is no where to go but out.  It doesn’t dissolve, or slowly melt away.  Rather, that tiny seed of a thought, if left there long enough, will grow like a big, fat, juicy tomato in the hot summer sun – splitting skin, deer nibbles, bug infestations and all.  Taking up space that should be used for things like financial planning, goal setting, and Christmas shopping lists, but instead I’m over here thinking, “Do I go full platinum, or maybe just an ombre? “ Serious life decisions, obviously.

So, I dyed it as blonde as my amazing hair stylist could get it, and while I didn’t love it, I didn’t totally hate it, either.  After all, I wanted to do it and I did, and it is kind of fun (although the answer is no, blondes do not have more fun.)  What I didn’t anticipate, however, was how other people would feel about my drastic change, or more importantly, how I would feel about how other people would feel.   I considered my husband, because if anyone’s opinions of how I look matter count, it’d be his.  But he is a “just go for it” kind of guy, so even when I was considering a less drastic “ombre” style, he would say, “Hey, go big or go home, right?”  I decided that I didn’t really care what anyone else thought, or so I had thought.

When the first few almost-compliments I received were about how good of a job the hairdresser did (go Allison!!) rather than “it looks good!”, I realized that I cared.  “Do you think you’ll keep it?” really meant “Don’t you regret doing that to your hair?”  Social media “likes” were probably more for having the courage to post a picture rather than looking good in the picture.  Like I said, I actually like it, and Dave has no complaints either, but when I know that I’m going to see someone who hasn’t yet seen me blonde, I brace myself for the awkward reaction.

This little experience has made me acknowledge a few things that I had convinced myself of otherwise.  I do care way more than I should about what other people think (about more things than just my hair), and I depend too much on external sources of approval (“likes” and such) more than I realized.  I was surprised to discover this inner fear of rejection, because I had myself convinced that I was some sort of carefree, confident soul, but bringing this fear to light is both a relief and a reminder that we can get so caught up in the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.  We forget that we are just as ever-changing as the hands of a clock, the turn of the seasons, and the earth we spin on.

Recognizing this insecurity I have been feeling – in the form of hair compliments of all things – has opened my eyes to the insecurities I have been avoiding in other areas of my life.  Being a stay at home mom while my friends advance in their careers has continued to return as an issue whenever I’m feeling especially inadequate in my current role, living far away from friends and family bothers me when I feel like it bothers friends and family who would rather us be closer, and plenty of other self-discoveries that would bore this readership if I were to list.  As hard it is to admit feeling weak and maybe a little dependent, it has been a great lesson that I am grateful to have learned, as silly as the life-curriculum had it play it out for me.

As soon as I could look at my slightly brassy blonde head in the mirror and find appreciation for what it meant for me – to be able to do something that I wanted to do, without worrying or caring how people would react or whether or not they approved, liked, or agreed with my choice – I found freedom.

I admit that this sounds so ridiculous and superficial, that I am trying to equate hair dye with some sort of deep inner wisdom, but I like that about life.  Lessons are everywhere, self-discovery is as easy as taking a step back from your life to just witness and observe, and you have the power and ability to be your own guru, your own therapist, and your own best friend.  I told my best friend in the mirror that she rocks that blonde pile of nonsense that helped her to uncover and conquer a couple of insecure demons.  Her response was,

Blonde hair, don’t care.

*Please do not confuse this post for a cry for compliments and comment things like “but it really does look good!” “I love your hair like that!” or any other things that you think I want to hear after reading this.  As much as it may seem like a shallow way to sneak in some feel-good, that was not the intention for writing this.

Letting Go with the Honey Moon

Every once in a while, I get into such a funk.  I notice my thoughts turning on me – being negative, fearful, judgmental, doubting, and just overall self-destructive.  I am constantly oscillating between wanting to do great things, bust out of my comfort zone, challenge myself and put myself out there, and then in a snap of a finger I just want to throw my phone into a lake and lock myself inside to bake cookies and read nonfiction novels – safe things.

There’s usually a reason for why the funk creeps in.  It’s usually in the form of not taking care of myself in some way, whether it be lack of movement, lack of green things being consumed, lack of SLEEP . . . . .or letting things I can’t control stress me out, feeling out of control financially, or letting my house cross the line from messy to filthy (messy I can live with).  This time, I know there are plenty of other factors that play into it, but with all of the talk of the Honey Moon, the full moon that would fall on Friday the 13th for the first time in about 100 years, I figured that could have something to do with feeling kind of out of whack, too.

I always read about how to use the moon cycles to help you let go or set intention to move forward.  I always think about incorporating them into my classes, or into my personal meditation, and then I look at the calendar and see that I’ve missed it. . . damn. . . .next time. . . seriously, next time.

Well, this time I couldn’t forget.  It was all over Facebook, it was a gorgeous, clear night here in Colorado, and I had some SERIOUS letting go to do.

So, I wrote the things I wanted to let go of on sticks.

Once the kid was fast asleep, we lit a bonfire in the backyard, under the gorgeous, bright, full, Honey Moon.

Then, I tossed each stick into the fire, mindfully, and with intention.

I woke up today feeling a little lighter.  I can’t say that I’ll never experience stress or negativity or fear ever again, but when I notice myself heading in that direction, I can be mindful of those feelings because I made a point to get rid of those things, so I’m more likely to notice them when they creep back in.

It reminds me of weeding.  Yesterday, I spent an entire nap time pulling weeds from the front yard.  It seems like I never really notice the weeds until they are out of control, OR, unless I had just recently spent a huge chunk of time, energy, and intention to get rid of them.  I swear, when I opened the shades this morning, I could see weeds where I had JUST picked!  I am sure that when I go out to my car to head to my class this morning, I’ll spend a couple of seconds to reach down and pull those weeds up, simply because I noticed them before they could get out of control.

You still have time to use the energy of the full moon to let go of some junk you don’t want to allow to creep in.  You don’t even need a bonfire.  You could simply write the words down on  a piece of paper and tear it up (or burn it, if you are a little pyro like me ;P).  You could even just contemplate the words during mediation, and imagine yourself breathing those things out of your consciousness.  I usually don’t like to meditate on things that I don’t want, because I truly believe in the Law of Attraction, so I prefer the bonfire approach – a more physical “letting go” activity.  But, if meditation is your thing, give it a try.

And since you probably already have it stuck in your head, go ahead. . . .

Question Authority

My big sister was (is!) so cool.  I remember when she first got her license when I was in Elementary School and I could see her car in the high school parking lot from the basketball court out at recess.  I would point it out to all of my friends, after wrapping a flannel shirt around the waist of my overalls and tying the funky laces on my Doc Martins. . . .because I was cool, like my big sister.

On the back bumper of her (old) Oldsmobile was a sticker that I didn’t really understand at the time that read: “Question Authority”.  I thought it sounded cool, but now that I’m older and wiser, I understand what that sticker meant, which is cool beyond flannel shirts, Doc Martins, and even the Beastie Boys.  “Question authority” is originally quoted from the Greek philosopher Socrates, but then regained popularity by the controversial psychologist, Timothy Leary around the time of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal.  While I’m not calling for a movement to oppose government, break laws, or disrespect those in authoritative roles, I think that this idea of questioning is a good one to keep in mind with all of the widespread information we are constantly being exposed to through various media sources.  Question everything – no matter who says it, where it’s posted, and who else believes it.  Her bumper didn’t make it to the days of Facebook, Twitter, and The Chive, but it’s lessons are more relevant now than ever.

I logged onto Facebook this morning and noticed a trend.  People were sharing various posts, whether they were for or against CrossFit, for or against vaccinations, for or against the trade for an American POW, or for or against the use of sunscreen (among many, many other topics).

This is good and bad.  It is good that people are seeing two sides of an argument, because in almost all of these stories there is fact, history, or science to back whatever the author is trying to convey.  It is bad, though, because since articles are so easy to write, put up and share, we forget that just because it is written, posted, and shared, doesn’t mean it’s true.   Question everything.

In college I had to take this boring computer course in my Community Health program where we learned how to tell if an article was legitimate or not.  There are certain things to look for in an article that is from a trustworthy source, rather than any old Joe who hosts a blog (like me!) or gets published on a legitimate site.  It is getting trickier and trickier to spot, as fancy web designing makes it hard to distinguish who really knows what they are talking about and who just has this whole social media marketing thing down pat.  So, before you click “share”, take a second to question the information, and question the source.

So, what makes an article “legit”?

  • Check for sources.  Then check the sources’ sources.  Is it purely opinion?  Are the anecdotes, statistics, or other “facts” actually true?  If a study is being used as evidence, how was the study conducted?  There are plenty of ways that studies can be screwed to produce a certain result, so make sure to check legitimacy of studies as well.
  • Check for credentials.  Many people have strong opinions on things, but few people have the credentials to back those opinions.  It is totally fine to have a strong opinion and write about it, but most of the time posts that go viral are written by writers, not necessarily the ones who have the most accurate information.
  • Check for accreditation.  Sites like WebMD and other websites sharing medical advice or information will have an icon on their page to prove that they are an accredited website, and therefore their content is held to a certain standard.
  • Check for sponsors or other deals that could sway opinion.  Many professional bloggers or writers are influenced by who pays them, whether it is through sponsorships, advertisements, or employment.  This isn’t a bad thing, but it is something to watch for when you are reading about a review, opinion, or experience.

 

I love all of the information that is out there these days.  I read more articles on my smartphone than I would flipping through a magazine or actually thinking to look something up on the web.  I feel empowered being informed, and knowing the latest trends in yoga, fitness, and even parenting.  I hear about things that are happening in the world through my newsfeed faster than if I only watched the news, and I also get to see more sides of the story in this way, when it used to mean having to switch between the different news stations.  This is all good, except when we take things at their word and forget to take the advice from the bumper sticker on the back of the Oldsmobile:  Question Authority.

Question everything.

Our Stories

If you were to describe yourself to someone who didn’t know you, what would you say?

Would you describe the way you look?  Height, weight, hair color, eye color, ethnicity, or maybe even the kind of clothes you typically wear?

Would you tell them your likes and dislikes, which political party you vote for, what hobbies you have, or the kind of books you like to read?

Do you tell them about your friends and family members, or experiences you’ve had like where you have traveled, or who you have gained or lost throughout your life?

How about what you are passionate about, what you do for a living, what your favorite color is, or what foods you like to eat?

What about your tendencies, such as being a jealous person, a compassionate person, an over-achiever, or anxious, stubborn, laid-back, or perhaps a “neat freak”?

At the last teacher training we were learning about the first three chakras, and there was a lot of introspection taking place within the group.  We were discovering where we felt off in our own energies, and how to create and maintain balance through various asanas, meditations, breathing exercises, and other activities.  I love this stuff, because it makes so much sense to me and I can definitely see how it works in my body and in my life.  When I hear a sad story, my hand immediately flies to my chest – my heart chakra.  Whenever I get “too in my head”, going for a walk or run help to ground me, or balance my root chakra.  During pregnancy, I felt like I couldn’t tap into any creativity to write, but what was actually happening was that all of my creative energy was being used up in baby-growing (which happens right at the sacral chakra, which, when balanced, has to do with creativity!) Is your mind blown yet?

Anyways, chakra study is really neat stuff, but what I found really interesting was to hear my fellow trainees (myself included) chime in with their own stories of what makes them who they are and why.  The anxious mother, the analytical doctor, the creative healer. . . .who was I?  What adjective do I belong to?  I thought about this throughout the weekend.  I can be anxious, but I can also be very laid-back.  I can be creative, but I can also be logical.  I can be giving and compassionate, but I can also be greedy and jealous.  I can be disciplined, and I can be lazy.

Can’t we all, though?  Everyone goes through these shifts in life.  Everyone.  We just attach ourselves to the side we notice or experience more, and then we feed into the idea of being that way and soon others see us in that way as well.  This can be a good thing, if it’s a positive trait and it’s kept fairly balanced (like being compassionate can be wonderful, unless it’s sucking the life out of you to feel everyone’s pain, or being disciplined is great unless you can’t chill out when you really need to).  However, it reminds me of children in school who are told by one teacher, or have repeatedly poor grades in one subject, and then cling to the idea that they are not good at that subject, or they are not smart, or even the opposite could be true, and both could do more harm than good.

How can clinging to “your story” keep you from growing?  Think about a personality trait, maybe one I have already mentioned, and notice your reaction to it.  Are you proud of it?  Do you resent it?  Do you wish it were different?  Do you hope you always embody it?

We’re constantly changing.  We grow older, we learn new things, our schedules change, our lifestyles change.  These changes can really affect these deeply ingrained ideas we have about ourselves, and clinging to them doesn’t help.  So, notice what you cling to.  Notice what you associate yourself with, and ask yourself if that “story” serves you, or how authentic this idea of yourself really is.  I want to believe I’m still the disciplined young adult who could get up at 5am, teach middle school kids all day, hop in the car and head straight to field hockey practice to coach high school girls for a couple of hours, and still find the energy to workout, eat well, and maintain a social life as well as a romantic relationship.  Nope, not me anymore.  Right now, I’m lucky if I can wash, fold and put away laundry all in the same day.  But, I won’t hang out too tightly to the “who I was” and “who I am” idea, because neither serve me and help me to be the best version of myself today.

I hope that after reading this you make a mental note to check yourself whenever you attach a story to your personality.  It could be a good story, or it could be a bad story, but being mindful of the story is the important part.

Yin & Yang & Your Workout

I just finished a workout that I really had no business doing.  My arms are shaking as I write this and slurp down my raw protein & cold brew concoction, but I could not get the words out of my brain and into my computer fast enough.

I ran a mile, then, broken up into varying sets of repetitions, completed 100 pullups, 200 pushups, and 300 squats, then finished by running another mile.  I modified, and don’t think I followed the rules to a “T”, but this fun little ditty is also known as “Murph”, and it is a CrossFit Hero WOD that many do on Memorial Day to honor and remember the men and women who have fought and died while serving in the military.  I don’t know what made me do it today, because I’m not a member at a box, I don’t work at the CrossFit gym anymore, and although I have been lifting in our little garage gym, I wouldn’t say I’m anywhere near as fast and strong as I used to be. . . .but maybe that’s exactly why I did it.

“Honor your limitations”, “Be easy with your body”. . . . These are things I say a lot as a yoga teacher, and hear a lot as a yoga student.  I like doing yoga, so I tend to do it a lot, which means I hear this a lot.  So I started thinking, does this advice serve me?  Maybe not.

I’m good at being easy.  I’m really good at honoring my body’s limitations.  I’m one of the few who have never had a yoga injury by pushing too far or attempting something beyond my ability.  This is a good thing in yoga, of course, but I’m starting to see it seep into my life in ways that would be good for the average “type A”, overachieving, perfectionist, but for someone who is so far from being one of those, this idea of “being easy” and “honoring limitations” is counterproductive, I think.

Yoga teaches us to listen to our bodies, but it also teaches us to listen to our minds, and get to know ourselves on a deeper level.  I am realizing that what I need to be the best version of myself might be the opposite of what is so attractive about yoga, and that is okay!

My body may have had no business doing that workout, but my mind and my soul needed it, loved it, and appreciated it.

Sometimes I have to just say, “Screw my limitations!”  Sometimes I need to push past the pain and do the hard stuff.  Sometimes it’s not about how much I can lift or how many pushups I can do, but how many I think I can do, or the inner dialogue that comes up when I want to quit, or I don’t even want to start.

It’s just about balance.  When you are feeling wound up and burnt out, you may need a little more yin in your life.  This would be when you would listen to your body, honor your limitations, and be easy.  Most people who seek out yoga are in need of this, which is why it is much more common for a teacher to cue in this way.  However, if you are too yin and have been going a little too easy on yourself and are maybe lacking confidence or drive, you could use more of a challenge by adding more yang elements into your practice and/or life.  Fear of failure?  Attempt a pose way out of your comfort zone.  Feeling weak-minded?  Stay in Warrior II for two whole minutes and notice the mental chatter.  Undisciplined?  Take up an Ashtanga practice, or at least devote yourself to a daily home practice.  Or, perhaps you climb a mountain, lift some weights, or sign up for a half marathon or obstacle course race.  Let your practice serve you, instead of meeting you where you are sometimes.  This can be tricky, because if you are someone who loves competition, sweat, challenge and discipline, you will naturally be drawn to the practice that feeds that, where a yin or restorative class would probably be more of what you need in order to find balance in your life.  The same goes for the opposite.

It’s not always about doing what you want, or what feels good. This has been a tough lesson for me to learn, because what draws me to yoga is that it feels so good and lets me take child’s pose whenever I want.  But, I have to remember that I came to yoga from a very different place than where I am now.  I was sore from head to toe from playing rugby, and had been a very competitive two-season varsity athlete all throughout high school before that.  Now my life looks very different, and so to expect the same effect from the same practice doesn’t make sense.

So pay attention to what draws you to certain things, whether it be the type of exercise you participate in, or even the people you surround yourself with.  Is it feeding into what you already are, or trying to balance that aspect of yourself with the complete opposite?  This has been such an interesting lesson in self-discovery for me, and I think many people can benefit from this kind of introspection.  What can you learn about yourself, by paying attention to yourself?  What do you need, as opposed to what you think you need?

Life Lessons From Navy SEAL Training, A Commencement Address by Adm. William H. McRaven

My dad knows me so well.  He forwarded me this commencement speech, given by Admiral William H. McRaven, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command at a recent college graduation at the University of Texas at Austin.  It was published in the Wall Street Journal Editorial section, and he knew I would eat it up, and make Dave read it, too.  I am a sucker for speeches like this; about changing the world by changing yourself, and trying to be a better person to better the world around you.  I love that he takes experiences from the military and applies them to life, like I try to do with lessons from the yoga mat.  There are so many gems in this thing that I will let you soak them in for yourself, but here are a few of my favorites:

Life Lessons From Navy SEAL Training

Adm. William H. McRaven, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, gave a commencement address last week that graduates, and their parents, won’t soon forget.

The following is adapted from the commencement address by Adm. William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, at the University of Texas at Austin on May 17.
The University of Texas slogan is “What starts here changes the world.”
I have to admit—I kinda like it.
“What starts here changes the world.”
Tonight there are almost 8,000 students graduating from UT.
That great paragon of analytical rigor, Ask.Com, says that the average American will meet 10,000 people in their lifetime.
That’s a lot of folks. But if every one of you changed the lives of just 10 people, and each one of those folks changed the lives of another 10 people—just 10—then in five generations, 125 years, the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800 million people.
Eight-hundred million people—think of it: over twice the population of the United States. Go one more generation and you can change the entire population of the world—eight billion people.
If you think it’s hard to change the lives of 10 people, change their lives forever, you’re wrong.
I saw it happen every day in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A young Army officer makes a decision to go left instead of right down a road in Baghdad and the 10 soldiers with him are saved from close-in ambush.
In Kandahar province, Afghanistan, a noncommissioned officer from the Female Engagement Team senses something isn’t right and directs the infantry platoon away from a 500-pound IED, saving the lives of a dozen soldiers.

But, if you think about it, not only were these soldiers saved by the decisions of one person, but their children yet unborn were also saved. And their children’s children were saved.
Generations were saved by one decision, by one person.
But changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it.
So, what starts here can indeed change the world, but the question is: What will the world look like after you change it?
Well, I am confident that it will look much, much better, but if you will humor this old sailor for just a moment, I have a few suggestions that may help you on your way to a better a world.
And while these lessons were learned during my time in the military, I can assure you that it matters not whether you ever served a day in uniform. It matters not your gender, your ethnic or religious background, your orientation, or your social status. Our struggles in this world are similar and the lessons to overcome those struggles and to move forward—changing ourselves and the world around us—will apply equally to all.
I have been a Navy SEAL for 36 years. But it all began when I left UT for Basic SEAL training in Coronado, Calif.
Basic SEAL training is six months of long, torturous runs in the soft sand, midnight swims in the cold water off San Diego, obstacle courses, unending calisthenics, days without sleep and always being cold, wet and miserable.
It is six months of being constantly harassed by professionally trained warriors who seek to find the weak of mind and body and eliminate them from ever becoming a Navy SEAL.
But, the training also seeks to find those students who can lead in an environment of constant stress, chaos, failure and hardships. To me basic SEAL training was a lifetime of challenges crammed into six months.
So, here are lessons I learned from basic SEAL training that hopefully will be of value to you as you move forward in life.
1. Every morning in basic SEAL training, my instructors, who at the time were all Vietnam veterans, would show up in my barracks room and the first thing they would inspect was your bed. If you did it right, the corners would be square, the covers pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack—that’s Navy talk for bed.
It was a simple task, mundane at best. But every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection. It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle hardened SEALs, but the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over.
If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.
If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.
And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.
If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
2. During SEAL training the students are broken down into boat crews. Each crew is seven students—three on each side of a small rubber boat and one coxswain to help guide the dingy. Every day, your boat crew forms up on the beach and is instructed to get through the surfzone and paddle several miles down the coast.
In the winter, the surf off San Diego can get to be 8 to 10 feet high and it is exceedingly difficult to paddle through the plunging surf unless everyone digs in. Every paddle must be synchronized to the stroke count of the coxswain. Everyone must exert equal effort or the boat will turn against the wave and be unceremoniously tossed back on the beach.
For the boat to make it to its destination, everyone must paddle.
You can’t change the world alone—you will need some help—and to truly get from your starting point to your destination takes friends, colleagues, the goodwill of strangers and a strong coxswain to guide them.
If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle.
3. Over a few weeks of difficult training my SEAL class, which started with 150 men, was down to just 42. There were now six boat crews of seven men each.
I was in the boat with the tall guys, but the best boat crew we had was made up of the little guys—the munchkin crew we called them. No one was over about 5-foot-5.
The munchkin boat crew had one American Indian, one African-American, one Polish-American, one Greek-American, one Italian-American and two tough kids from the Midwest.
They out-paddled, out-ran and out-swam all the other boat crews.
The big men in the other boat crews would always make good-natured fun of the tiny little flippers the munchkins put on their tiny little feet prior to every swim. But somehow these little guys, from every corner of the nation and the world, always had the last laugh—swimming faster than everyone and reaching the shore long before the rest of us.
SEAL training was a great equalizer. Nothing mattered but your will to succeed. Not your color, not your ethnic background, not your education and not your social status.
If you want to change the world, measure people by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers.
4. Several times a week, the instructors would line up the class and do a uniform inspection. It was exceptionally thorough. Your hat had to be perfectly starched, your uniform immaculately pressed and your belt buckle shiny and void of any smudges.
But it seemed that no matter how much effort you put into starching your hat, or pressing your uniform or polishing your belt buckle, it just wasn’t good enough. The instructors would find “something” wrong.
For failing the uniform inspection, the student had to run, fully clothed, into the surfzone and then, wet from head to toe, roll around on the beach until every part of your body was covered with sand. The effect was known as a “sugar cookie.” You stayed in that uniform the rest of the day—cold, wet and sandy.
There were many students who just couldn’t accept the fact that all their effort was in vain. That no matter how hard they tried to get the uniform right, it was unappreciated.
Those students didn’t make it through training. Those students didn’t understand the purpose of the drill. You were never going to succeed. You were never going to have a perfect uniform.
Sometimes, no matter how well you prepare or how well you perform, you still end up as a sugar cookie. It’s just the way life is sometimes.
If you want to change the world, get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward.
5. Every day during training you were challenged with multiple physical events. Long runs, long swims, obstacle courses, hours of calisthenics—something designed to test your mettle.
Every event had standards, times that you had to meet. If you failed to meet those standards, your name was posted on a list and at the end of the day those on the list were invited to a “circus.”
A circus was two hours of additional calisthenics designed to wear you down, to break your spirit, to force you to quit. No one wanted a circus. A circus meant that for that day you didn’t measure up. A circus meant more fatigue, and more fatigue meant that the following day would be more difficult—and more circuses were likely.
But at some time during SEAL training, everyone—everyone—made the circus list. Yet an interesting thing happened to those who were constantly on the list. Over time those students, who did two hours of extra calisthenics, got stronger and stronger. The pain of the circuses built inner strength—built physical resiliency.
Life is filled with circuses. You will fail. You will likely fail often. It will be painful. It will be discouraging. At times it will test you to your very core.
But if you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses.
6. At least twice a week, the trainees were required to run the obstacle course. The obstacle course contained 25 obstacles including a 10-foot-high wall, a 30-foot cargo net and a barbed-wire crawl, to name a few.
But the most challenging obstacle was the slide for life. It had a three-level, 30-foot tower at one end and a one-level tower at the other. In between was a 200-foot-long rope.
You had to climb the three-tiered tower and, once at the top, you grabbed the rope, swung underneath the rope and pulled yourself hand over hand until you got to the other end.
The record for the obstacle course had stood for years when my class began training in 1977. The record seemed unbeatable until one day a student decided to go down the slide for life—head-first. Instead of swinging his body underneath the rope and inching his way down, he bravely mounted the top of the rope and thrust himself forward.
It was a dangerous move—seemingly foolish, and fraught with risk. Failure could mean injury and being dropped from the training. Without hesitation, the student slid down the rope, perilously fast. Instead of several minutes, it only took him half that time and by the end of the course he had broken the record.
If you want to change the world sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head-first.
7. During the land-warfare phase of training, the students are flown out to San Clemente Island near San Diego. The waters off San Clemente are a breeding ground for great white sharks. To pass SEAL training, there are a series of long swims that must be completed. One is the night swim.
Before the swim, the instructors joyfully brief the trainees on all the species of sharks that inhabit the waters off San Clemente. The instructors assure you, however, that no student has ever been eaten by a shark—at least not recently.
But, you are also taught that if a shark begins to circle your position, stand your ground. Do not swim away. Do not act afraid. And if the shark, hungry for a midnight snack, darts towards you, then summon up all your strength and punch him in the snout and he will turn and swim away.
There are a lot of sharks in the world. If you hope to complete the swim you will have to deal with them.
So, if you want to change the world, don’t back down from the sharks.
8. As Navy SEALs, one of our jobs is to conduct underwater attacks against enemy shipping. We practiced this technique extensively during basic training. The ship-attack mission is where a pair of SEAL divers is dropped off outside an enemy harbor and then swims well over 2 miles—underwater—using nothing but a depth gauge and a compass to get to their target.
During the entire swim, even well below the surface, there is some light that comes through. It is comforting to know that there is open water above you. But as you approach the ship, which is tied to a pier, the light begins to fade. The steel structure of the ship blocks the moonlight, it blocks the surrounding street lamps, it blocks all ambient light.
To be successful in your mission, you have to swim under the ship and find the keel—the centerline and the deepest part of the ship. This is your objective. But the keel is also the darkest part of the ship, where you cannot see your hand in front of your face, where the noise from the ship’s machinery is deafening and where it is easy to get disoriented and fail.
Every SEAL knows that under the keel, at the darkest moment of the mission, is the time when you must be calm, composed—when all your tactical skills, your physical power and all your inner strength must be brought to bear.
If you want to change the world, you must be your very best in the darkest moment.
9. The ninth week of SEAL training is referred to as Hell Week. It is six days of no sleep, constant physical and mental harassment and one special day at the Mud Flats. The Mud Flats are an area between San Diego and Tijuana where the water runs off and creates the Tijuana slues—a swampy patch of terrain where the mud will engulf you.
It is on Wednesday of Hell Week that you paddle down to the mud flats and spend the next 15 hours trying to survive the freezing-cold mud, the howling wind and the incessant pressure from the instructors to quit.
As the sun began to set that Wednesday evening, my training class, having committed some “egregious infraction of the rules” was ordered into the mud. The mud consumed each man till there was nothing visible but our heads. The instructors told us we could leave the mud if only five men would quit—just five men and we could get out of the oppressive cold.
Looking around the mud flat, it was apparent that some students were about to give up. It was still over eight hours till the sun came up—eight more hours of bone-chilling cold. The chattering teeth and shivering moans of the trainees were so loud it was hard to hear anything. And then, one voice began to echo through the night—one voice raised in song.
The song was terribly out of tune, but sung with great enthusiasm. One voice became two, and two became three, and before long everyone in the class was singing.
We knew that if one man could rise above the misery then others could as well. The instructors threatened us with more time in the mud if we kept up the singing—but the singing persisted. And somehow, the mud seemed a little warmer, the wind a little tamer and the dawn not so far away.
If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world, it is the power of hope. The power of one person—Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela and even a young girl from Pakistan named Malala—can change the world by giving people hope.
So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud.
10. Finally, in SEAL training there is a bell. A brass bell that hangs in the center of the compound for all the students to see.
All you have to do to quit is ring the bell. Ring the bell and you no longer have to wake up at 5 o’clock. Ring the bell and you no longer have to do the freezing cold swims. Ring the bell and you no longer have to do the runs, the obstacle course, the PT—and you no longer have to endure the hardships of training. Just ring the bell.
If you want to change the world don’t ever, ever ring the bell.
To the graduating class of 2014, you are moments away from graduating. Moments away from beginning your journey through life. Moments away from starting to change the world—for the better.
It will not be easy.
But start each day with a task completed. Find someone to help you through life. Respect everyone. Know that life is not fair and that you will fail often, but if you take some risks, step up when the times are toughest, face down the bullies, lift up the downtrodden and never, ever give up—if you do these things, then the next generation and the generations that follow will live in a world far better than the one we have today. And what started here will indeed have changed the world, for the better.

How Do You Eat Your Trail Mix?

Uh oh.  I am in trouble.

I was eating trail mix, or so I thought, and somehow all that is left are nuts and raisins, which means I wasn’t actually eating trail mix. . . . just chocolate.

I always do this.  At my bridal shower, my sister in law had us play this game where she sent Dave a letter while he was at Basic Training to fill out with all of these questions about what his favorite food was or what he thought my favorite color was.  Then they had me guess his answers, and if I got them wrong, I had to put gum in my mouth so the more I got incorrect, the harder it became to chew the giant wad of gum.  One of the questions revealed what Dave’s biggest pet peeve was about me, and turns out, “picking out all of the good stuff” of things like trail mix was his number one annoyance!  I can think of a few more things that I do that I thought he would have considered more annoying, like coming in halfway through a movie and asking a million questions, or telling the same story over and over and over, but no, leaving trail mix chocolate-less was the worst thing I could do.  And now I’ve done it again!

What’s so bad about “picking out the good stuff”?  I like good stuff.  I like to do things that make me feel good, and avoid the things that don’t make me feel good.  That sounds like a good plan, right?  Well, not exactly.  Sometimes it’s important to do things that you don’t like to do, because they will eventually make you feel good.  Like doing laundry, for example.  I’m sure very few people get a good deal of pleasure out of the tedious task of laundering, but doesn’t it feel nice to have clean, soft, fresh clothing and linens?  Studying for a test may not be the most enjoyable activity, but receiving a good grade after all of your hard effort feels pretty good, doesn’t it?

Nuts and raisins are good too!

This is the mantra that I am using these days to get myself to do the hard stuff.  I don’t like to clean, but I feel better when I do.  I hate feeling sore, but love feeling strong.  My least favorite chore is filling up at the gas station, but it’s just something I need to do whether I want to or not.

The best part is that I’ve started to enjoy these mundane, annoying tasks knowing that I will feel so good when they are finished.  It’s easy to do the fun stuff, but doing the things you don’t necessarily like takes discipline.  It tastes good to eat the chocolate, but it feels good to eat the nuts and raisins.

So eat the nuts and raisins, and leave some chocolate for your husband sometimes. . . .

Spring: The Season of The Beginner

I went for a run last night.  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day, and the sun was still out at 6:30pm when I finally laced up my sneakers.   Running has never been so hard for me as it has been lately.  Dave reminds me that we’re at a higher elevation and that probably has something to do with it, but I think not running for a year and growing and birthing a tiny human have much more to do with my slow pace and even slower progression.  I feel like a beginner.

Spring is nature’s beginner.  It’s known for birth and growth, as we see flowers bloom, grass peaking through where snow used to be, and we wake up to the sound of birds chirping.  Spring can also be beautiful and warm one day, and snowing and cold the next.  When we think of Spring, we envision flowers and sunshine and flip flops, but in reality, a lot of the season is made up of rain, and sometimes even snow.  It’s like being a beginner at something.  It’s exciting and fresh, but it can be pretty tough and sometimes depressing.  We look to May when we’re stuck in March, like I dream about running half marathons while I’m struggling through two slow miles, or a new yoga student who can’t wait to stand on her hands, when she knows that downward facing dog is where she needs to be until she gains enough strength to float upside down.

I am in complete beginner mode right now.  I still feel pretty new to Colorado, even though we’ve been here almost a year now, and I don’t care how old Dylan gets, I feel like you are a beginner every single day as a mother (even when your kid is 7, 16, 18, 23. . . .)  I am a beginner yoga teacher, despite teaching on and off for the past six years, as I take on new classes and have enrolled in another 200 hr Teacher Training Program.  I am new to the studios that I have started going to, after a long stretch of primarily practicing at home, and I am definitely feeling like a beginner runner, even though I have run pretty consistently since high school.

Sometimes I love to be a beginner.  There’s freedom to mess up, or to not know everything.  When it snows in Spring, no one is really that surprised.  Snow in July?  That’s a different story!  Once you cross the threshold into “experienced”, there’s an expectation attached to you, which can be a little scary.  Another thing I love about being a beginner is the confidence I can find there.  When I started running again, I knew I would be slow and the run would be short, but all that mattered was that I was doing it, and that made me feel amazing.  Now that I’ve been running and I’m STILL slow and can only do a couple miles, it’s starting to bug me, but those first few when I was just proud of myself for doing a little bit, I felt so strong and so inspired.

I love being a yoga student and a yoga teacher because you can be “advanced” or “experienced” and still be a beginner every single time you get on the mat.  One of the first things we addressed in last weekend’s teacher training is that there is no “certified” in yoga (WHOOPS!  I have been considering myself a “certified yoga teacher” for years now!)  This is a good thing to remember in all areas of life.  You can always be a beginner, and you should always be a beginner.  Spring comes every single year, no matter now many years it has been coming.  It needs to, in order for Summer to arrive, followed by Fall, and then Winter, and then Spring will come again.  And again.  And again.  It’s a nice reminder to be humble, patient, and that there is always more to learn when you go into it with a beginner’s mindset. 

I’m sitting here watching my son learn how to crawl.  He’s been pulling himself along with his upper body for about a month now, and he still gets to excited about his new trick that he howls with each pull.  Watching him reminds me that we’re all beginners in something at any given moment, and to approach each step in the process with his enthusiasm.

Just Keep Your Knees Bent

I turned to Dave as the chairlift brought us up the mountain last weekend, asking his advice on how to execute the terrain park without ending up in the emergency room.  I was graduating from the “baby park” to the big park, where jumps are bigger, boxes are longer, and rails are higher.  “Just keep your knees bent”, he began, explaining how when your knees are bent, you are ready for anything, and keeping your knees bent in the air gives you better control (rather than splaying out and waving your arms), and landing without bent knees is a recipe for disaster.  I took his advice, and although I was too scared to try the slanted box and the high rails, I felt confident to attempt, and land, some bigger jumps, the rainbow rail, and the less-intimidating box on my snowboard.   I wanted to ride with the big boys, so I had to try and keep up.  I just kept my knees bent, which helped me feel stable when approaching an obstacle, despite snow conditions, nerves, or distractions.  When my board left the snow and I was in the air (okay, I’m sure I was only about a foot and a half off the ground, but it felt super high) bending my knees and keeping my body relaxed put me in a good position to be able to land, and of course I did so with bent knees, to absorb my landing and keep me moving forward.  I just kept my knees bent.

In yoga last night, I kept noticing the instructor’s reminders about soft or bent knees in the various poses.  Of course this was to avoid strain or injury, or to improve balance, similar to Dave’s advice for snowboarding, but I think that “keeping your knees bent” could be good advice for life, too.

Prepare for challenges, be confident, take risks, stay in control, keep moving forward, and soften before you fall hard.

Just keep your knees bent. . .

Are You Trying Too Hard?

I tend to listen to the same few bands when I’m snowboarding: 311, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam, and Slightly Stoopid.  Maybe it’s because I loaded up my iPod about 5 years ago and haven’t made a new playlist since, but I still dig it.

One of my favorite Slightly Stoopid songs is called “Everything You Need”, and there is a lyric that I always found kind of interesting.  When I watched the runs of the first two (“super stoked”) Americans to win gold in Sochi in the 2014 Winter Olympics in the slope style event, I considered these lyrics again.

“The harder you try the less you succeed
Don’t try at all and get everything you need
Because the harder you fall the more it’s gon bleed
Watch where you stepping cause you best not step on me”

Now, I’m not saying that you should be as lazy as you can if you want to be an Olympian.  Clearly, everyone who made it to Sochi this year has worked their butts off to get there, but I couldn’t help but notice what the announcers have been saying over and over again when describing how an athlete performed, whether it was ice dancing, snowboarding, speed skating, luging, or ski jumping.  They comment on how relaxed the bodies of the athletes are when they are out there doing their thing.  Interesting, considering when you think of sports and Olympians you think of strength, effort, and intensity, right?

In slow motion replay, the announcers point out how there is no excess movement while the athlete is high up in the air, spinning or flipping or just flying.  Same for when they are gliding along the ice, on skates or sleds.  They notice if an athlete starts out a little stiff, but then gets more and more comfortable out there and loosens up.  It seems to be the key to a perfect performance, and when asked how they prepare themselves despite the huge amount of pressure they are up against, many of the Olympians report using techniques like meditation, mantra, or deep breathing.  Surprised?  Not me!

When I played field hockey in high school, I experienced a rough patch my senior year.  My third year playing and starting on the varsity team, and holding the title of “captain”, all of a sudden I was experiencing real pressure to perform well.  In the previous seasons, I could stop any ball, any time, anywhere, even when it meant reaching out and grabbing the ball with a bare hand (totally illegal – I got called for it, but at least they didn’t score!).  However, when I was put at the top of the circle as the point person to stop the ball on a penalty corner, I Could. Not. Do. It.  So frustrating!  Looking back, it was because I was trying way too hard.  My eyes were too focused, my body too stiff, my hands gripped too tight, and my mind too rigid.  When I just went out there and played, I could be good.  But when I was trying to be good, I sucked.

I used to teach yoga to CrossFit athletes, and I would always remind them to pay attention to their facial expressions when they were in a difficult pose.  I swear, things are so much easier when your face is calm!  It is a mind/body trick.  CrossFitters love to grunt and grit and show their pain on their faces, but I remember noticing that the top athletes in the CrossFit Games looked very relaxed and composed while they were performing their WOD’s, despite how difficult and strenuous the workouts were.  I’ve tried it myself, and doing squat cleans with clenched teeth is a lot more difficult than it is when you keep the energy out of your face.

As a new mom, I’m discovering that the more energy I spend trying to adhere to schedules and timelines, the less likely it is to actually work.  A few days ago, I spent about 4 hours trying to get the little dude to go down for a nap.  I would rock, and nurse, and nurse, and rock. . . Then, when he pulled the no-nap thing again the other day, I simply went along with it, and he did, eventually, nap.  But I saved 4 hours of my day by not clinging to the schedule.  Now, there are definitely pros and cons for schedules and what not when it comes to babies, but not “trying too hard” seems to work best for me and Dylan.

Doesn’t it seem, then, that “the harder you try, the less you succeed”?  It’s not about flaking on training, but about composing yourself in a relaxed state before putting your skills to the test.  This could be playing a sport, performing in the Olympics, giving a speech, taking a test, or even (I’m learning) parenting!  “Because the harder you fall, the more it’s gon’ bleed“, so instead of gripping, tensing, and getting frustrated, just go out there and do what you know you can do extremely well, without putting that extra stress on yourself.  Play your favorite song through your headphones, take a few deep breaths, shake out your limbs and soften your face.  Then, you can win gold, or maybe just a hug.  Both are so worth it.
